PHUKET BLONDE, RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THAILAND.
Here we would like to give you some basic information about what you
should do and bring with you.
INSURANCE
As the old saying goes, ‘If you can’t afford insurance, you can’t
afford to go’ Insurance is very important for all international
travel, it does not have to be expensive and will give you peace of
mind. Take a look at some of the insurance options when you book
your flight. Insurance is your responsibility.
DRIVING LICENSE
Thai law states that you must have an international driving
license to drive a car or motorcycle. Most people do not bring one
with them but we advise that you do just incase. These are available
from places such as NRMA for a fee. When you rent a car or
motorcycle the responsibility lies completely with you. Common sense
applies.
HEALTH
Phuket is a very safe place, once again, common sense does
apply. Malaria on Phuket apparently does not exist - we are yet to
hear of a single case. However, Dengue fever does exist, as it does
in Australia. Proper care should be taken to avoid mosquito bites –
long sleeve shirts and pants at dawn and dust, mosquito repellent /
candles and the like. Have a look at www.who.int for more
information. Don’t panic…millions of people come to Phuket each year
and you hear of very few problems.
FOOD & WATER
Food is not a problem, as food to Thai people is very important
and a seller can’t afford to get their customers sick. However like
everywhere, be sensible and don’t buy something you think you
shouldn’t eat, wash your hands often and enjoy the culinary
delights. Water on the other hand should only be drunk from bottles
– not from the tap. It is okay to wash with, brush your teeth with
and cook with but when drinking it – buy it! It’s very cheap in the
bottled form.
DRUGS – DON’T MESS WITH THEM
Thailand takes drug use very seriously and severe penalties
apply!! Have a beer instead.
VISAS
They are your responsibility, although generally Thailand allows
a up to ‘30 days on arrival’ visa free of charge’ for most
countries. Check it out before you come.
RESPECT THE CULTURE AND THE LAND
This is Thailand, please do some reading on Thai culture before
you get here. Thai people are great people and it is an amazing
place. It may even help to buy a small language/phrase book for the
trip.
MONEY
Some travelers find it is best to just take out enough money per
day from their ATM cards, all ATM CIRRUS cards work in Thailand.
Credit cards are widely accepted but better just for large purchases
at large stores, cash is better. Take care of your valuables -
passport/cash/TC/cards etc. Some people also use money belts which
are a good idea, theft is rare but care should naturally be taken.
THE HEAT
Yes, this is Thailand – expect to get hot! Take care to drink
plenty of water and take care of yourself. You do acclimatize with
time and the heat can be quite nice, it’s up to you if you want to
stay out in the sun or in the shade.
